For anyone aiming at the industry the answer is clear: yes — but software should not be the first step, and it can never substitute for design ability.
Start from your career goal
If you only want to furnish your own home, being able to read a plan, develop a sense of dimension and use a mood board or a simple online planner already solves a lot. But if the goal is a design assistant role, becoming a residential or commercial designer, or taking freelance commissions, software is the basic professional language.
Industry work is not handing over one attractive render. A project runs through brief, site measure, planning, development, material selection, visual output, construction drawings and several rounds of revision. Software turns each of those into something checkable, revisable and transferable. Without it your ideas stay verbal; with software but no design understanding, the drawings may only look professional.
